Sleeping at 5:00 AM probably isn’t the greatest idea. I slept until 3:00 PM and still didn’t want to get out of bed. I finally got up, but most of the day was already gone. I think for the first time since I got to Shanghai, I didn’t go out. I stayed in the entire day. Didn’t go out to eat, didn’t go to Carrefour, nothing. I just stayed home, tried to study and did some Jailbreaking.
I think this is my shortest daily recap so far.
Two weeks? Wow, it really has been two weeks. Unfortunately, I still can’t order food on my own most of the time. Picture menus!
Another lazy day. Woke up at noon, made some instant noodles for lunch, and furiously updated this blog. Have you noticed? =P
Of course, no week can be complete without multiple visits to Carrefour, and once again, I went grocery shopping there. Finally got a wok! After Carrefour, I decided to cook some rice and some of the Chinese sausage that my cousin brought me from Guangzhou. I underestimated how much rice I made, but I ate it all anyways. Hopefully, I didn’t undercook the Chinese sausage, because I had a massive headache right after I ate. It was so bad that I couldn’t concentrate on studying for my Chinese test. I took a nap to see if it would go away, and when at woke up at 2:00 AM, it did mostly subside. I studied for a couple of hours and then went back to sleep.
My first full day to do just nothing. I slept until 1 PM, when I finally decided I should be more productive. I went to Carrefour to do some grocery shopping. With my limited Mandarin skills, I can’t possibly imagine going out to buy stuff to eat every night. Have to do some good ol’ cooking.
Funny enough, after returning from my first trip to Carrefour, it turns out Bram wanted to go grocery shopping as well. Since I didn’t really buy everything that the kitchen needed, I went for another round of shopping. We got most of what we needed, except for a wok. Most importantly, I did find out that real orange juice exists in supermarkets. It’s just not very cheap. At 12 RMB, it was twice as expensive as orangeade and only half the size. Oh well, it’s well worth it.
Two rounds of grocery shopping were enough for me. Luckily, I didn’t have to go for a third round in one day.
With the orientation presentations done, it was time to visit a water town outside of Shanghai. We had a choice between Xitang and Tongli. I originally signed up for Xitang, but most of the people I knew were going to Tongli, so I did a last minute switch. I’m glad I did. It was probably the hottest day yet since I’ve landed and Tongli had plenty of trees. Xitang, on the other hand, had barely any from what I heard.

First full day here in Shanghai and it was quite eventful. Started out with a breakfast buffet at East China Normal University (ECNU) where NYU holds its classes. After breakfast, we sat through some presentations and did some icebreakers. We also took a group photo in front of the giant Mao statue. ECNU, by the way, has a very pretty campus. Trees, grass, and plants everywhere and small rivers run through. I’ll get around to taking photos of the campus one of these days.
