10/08/2009 – Day 47 – Relief

Doctor’s appointment day! Couldn’t be happier to see a doctor, something that usually wouldn’t happen. During Chinese class, we were told what our Chinese midterm would be: interview an ECNU student in Mandarin, write an essay about the interview, and then present it. Not exactly what I was expecting, but in retrospect, it beats memorizing ton of characters for a written test.

In law, the guest speaker was actually interesting, but he took a bit long to finish. I had to rush to my doctor’s appointment and was late by a fair amount. Luckily, everything went by quickly and I got some good news. The doctor examined my bites/spots and agreed with me that they probably were just allergic reactions to the bugs. He gave me steroid cream and an anti-histamine called chorphenamine.

10/01/2009 – Day 40 – The nightmare

The day of the tour and I will say, it was… interesting. We waited outside for the bus to pick us up. It felt strange having the bus come to us instead of us going to the bus, but I’m not complaining. The first thing the tour lady noticed when we boarded was that were foreigners. After the rest of the tour group was picked up, she began to talk. Actually, talk isn’t a good word to describe it. More like she was reciting a speech or something. She kept talking and talking and talking nonstop. I couldn’t understand a word of it, so I thought she was talking about stuff relevant to the places we were going to see. It was later brought to my attention that she was talking about herself and her son! Really now? I didn’t get to sleep because she was so self-centered?

Luckily, she stopped at the rest stop, but then started again when we got back on the bus. Ugh. Not only did she not stop talking, she kept bugging Jessie (the only Mandarin speaker in our group) when we refused to pay extra for stuff we didn’t want to see. She insisted and we resisted. She got pretty annoyed at us and continued to make our lives a living hell for the rest of the day.

09/16/2009 – Day 25 – My new haircut

More shady dealing! Since we bought more plane tickets, we had to wait for another guy give us the tickets in exchange for a giant wad of cash. This time, it was at the front gate of ECNU. It really does feel awkward doing the exchange, especially in broad daylight and in such a crowded area.

09/12/2009 – Day 21 – Parading

Weekends have become my sleeping days. Just like old times. It’s funny how during the end of last semester, I was waking up before my alarm or waking up early even though I was exhausted. And now, I’m barely waking up to my alarm.
