10/23/2009 – Day 62 – The Terracotta Soldiers

Xi’an! I was very excited for this trip, even if I was dead tired. At first it seemed like my excitement was unwarranted, as the trip had an uninspiring start. At the airport, the terminal we were at was in some dingy basement (it looked more like Hong Qiao airport than Pudong airport) and the heat must have been set on max because it was excruciatingly hot. It was also really crowded. The plane ride wasn’t much better. I stayed awake for the breakfast, which I shouldn’t have done because it was terrible. By far the worst airplane meal I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.

Fortunately, it was a pretty short flight. We were on the bus for about an hour before we arrived at the buffet lunch. The restaurant was really fancy and the food was pretty good. The fanciest part of the restaurant had to be the restroom. I wish I took a picture of it because it was absurd. Liquid soap from a teapot!

Fancy!

10/10/2009 – Day 49 – Burger hopping

Ever visit five Burger Kings in less than a day? I did for my group’s marketing project. It’s not that fun, but it’s certainly an interesting experience. Unfortunately, there aren’t many BKs in Shanghai, so the ones that are here are pretty scattered. Basically, our day looked like this:

Zhongshan Park -> taxi to Xujiahui -> taxi to Jing’An Temple -> metro line 2 to People’s Square -> metro line 2 to Lujiazui -> taxi to Shanghai Stadium -> metro line 3 back to Zhongshan Park

09/28/2009 – Day 37 – The countryside

After spending the last three days doing what tourists would do, it was time to do something many tourists usually wouldn’t do: visit a rural village. The last time I stepped foot in a village was twelve years ago when I was last in China and visited my dad’s home village, Taishan. This time, I got to see our tour guide’s village. To get there, we took a relaxing two hour boat ride there (cue “I’m on a Boat”).

The village was what I expected. Lots of farmland, farm animals and dogs running around, etc. Of course, this village had a ton of water buffalo. We got to meet Jessie’s family, which was nice. The family runs a convenience shop (possibly the only one in the village) and it seemed strange seeing cup noodles in the village.

Water buffalo!

09/27/2009 – Day 36 – Rock climbing

After an exhausting ourselves the past two days, we sort of expected to be tired at the end of every day in Guilin. Of course, we could see that just by looking at the itinerary. Not that I’m complaining; the Guilin trip was wonderful. Of the four NYU-sponsored trips, we did name the Guilin trip the “exercise trip” (Guizhou was the “community service trip”; Gansu was the “adventurous trip”; and Hong Kong was the “metropolitan trip”).

The exhausting part of the day was rock climbing. Uhhh, rock climbing? My fear of heights certainly doesn’t sound good here…

09/11/2009 – Day 20 – Ekohe

Today was a make-up class day =(

OK, so it wasn’t that bad. I only had Chinese. The next make-up day will be the worst, since I’ll have three classes. And this was one Chinese class we needed because we have another test on Monday. Things are starting to get more difficult. We learned a bunch of new characters and the pinyin and tones are still killing me.
